Motorcycle insurance FAQs

Yes. If your motorcycle is registered for road use in Australia, it must have Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance. In some states and territories, this cover is included with registration. In others, you need to arrange it separately before your bike can be registered.

CTP covers third-party compensation claims if you or another rider has legal liability for an accident that injures someone else. It doesn’t cover damage to your bike, another vehicle, fences, buildings, gear, or personal property.

To bridge this gap, optional motorcycle insurance sits on top of CTP. It can help cover authorised repairs, theft, fire, storm damage, vandalism and your liability if you damage someone else’s property.

Motorcycle insurance usually falls into three main categories:

  • Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance provides the most cover. It can cover damage to your motorcycle, even if you are at fault, as well as theft, fire, weather damage, vandalism, roadside assistance, and damage your motorcycle causes to someone else’s property.
  • Third-Party Motorcycle Insurance covers damage your motorcycle causes to other people’s vehicles or property. It does not usually cover repairs to your own bike, except in limited circumstances such as some no-fault accidents involving an uninsured driver.
  • Third-Party Property, Fire and Theft Motorcycle Insurance provides cover for other people’s property, plus cover if your motorcycle is stolen or damaged by fire.

The right choice depends on the value of your motorcycle, how often you ride, where it is stored and how much risk you are comfortable carrying yourself.

Always check the relevant Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for full details before choosing a policy, as cover limits, excesses, and exclusions vary between insurers.

Motorcycle insurance doesn’t provide cover for every situation. Common exclusions include:

  • Racing, rallies, contests or timed events
  • Rideshare, courier or food delivery work
  • Riding without the correct licence
  • Using the bike illegally or outside policy conditions
  • Tyre punctures, cuts or bursts
  • General wear and tear, rust or corrosion
  • Mechanical, electrical or structural breakdown
  • Damage caused by using the wrong fuel
  • Pre-existing damage or gradual deterioration

That said, this is only general advice. Every motorcycle insurance policy has its own limits. The PDS will explain exactly what’s excluded and when an excess may apply.

Yes. Off-road bikes, motocross bikes, enduro bikes and recreational dirt bikes can be insured, but they may need a more specialised policy.

Additionally, some insurers may exclude racing, timed events, competition use or damage that happens during organised events.

If you own an off-road bike, it’s worth speaking with our experienced brokers before assuming a standard motorcycle policy will do the job.

Yes. Some insurance policies include cover for motorcycle gear damaged in an insured event.

This may include your helmet, riding boots and protective clothing like jackets, pants, and gloves. Cover limits vary, and some insurers only cover gear if it was being worn at the time of the accident or damaged in the same incident as the insured motorcycle.

Yes. Learner riders and new riders can take out motorcycle insurance, provided they meet the insurer’s licence and eligibility requirements.

The main thing to check is the excess. Many insurers apply an additional inexperienced rider excess if the person riding the motorcycle is on a learner permit, under a certain age, or has held a motorcycle licence for less than a set period.

Not automatically. Another person may be covered to ride your motorcycle if they have your permission, hold the correct licence and meet the policy conditions.

Some policies cover unnamed riders. Others may require all regular riders to be listed. Extra excesses can also apply if the rider is young, inexperienced, unlisted or on a learner permit.

Before lending your bike to someone else, always check the PDS or speak with your broker to confirm who’s covered.

Agreed value and market value are two different ways insurers may calculate your motorcycle’s insured value if it is stolen or written off:

  • Agreed value is a fixed amount agreed between you and the insurer when the policy starts. It is listed on your Certificate of Insurance and gives you more certainty about the payout amount during that period of cover.
  • Market value is the insurer’s assessment of what your motorcycle was worth immediately before the incident. This may take into account the bike’s age, make, model, kilometres, condition, location, accessories and modifications.

Whether or not you should choose agreed or market value depends on your personal preference. Agreed value suits riders who want a clear payout figure, whereas market value suits riders who are comfortable with the insurer assessing the bike’s value at the time of the claim.

You may be able to get a brand new motorcycle if your bike is written off, but only if your comprehensive policy includes that benefit and your bike meets the conditions.

Many new-for-old replacement benefits only apply for a limited period from the motorcycle’s first registration date. That usually means the first time the bike was registered by anyone, not the date you bought it.

This matters if you purchased the bike second-hand. Even if it is new to you, it may be too old to qualify for new motorcycle replacement under the policy.

If this benefit matters to you, we can help you look for a comprehensive motorcycle insurance policy that includes it.

Motorcycle insurance costs vary from rider to rider. Your insurance premium depends on the bike you ride, where you live, how the bike is stored and the level of cover you choose.

Insurers may consider:

  • Your motorcycle’s make, model, age and value
  • Whether it has accessories or modifications
  • Your age and riding experience
  • Whether you have a good claims history
  • Where the bike is kept overnight
  • Your suburb or postcode
  • How often you ride
  • Whether you choose market value or agreed value
  • The type of cover and excess you select
  • Applicable discounts

A cheaper policy may reduce your upfront cost, but it may also come with lower limits, fewer benefits or higher excesses.

We can compare motorcycle insurance options across different insurers and help you find cover that suits your personal circumstances.
